Most towns have a chamber of commerce, many are on-line now. search for local newspapers on line, reality sites for homes/rentals, and call the chamber for a new resident packet. It will tell you how many /types of stores, restaurants, population, industry there, schools etc. My small town has a ton of info on line, so search for info on the place you want to move to. Sample below.
