A little background about the company is excellent - it lets them know that you're really interested in working there. Smile, be confident and friendly. just be polite and professional.
If I were hiring a person to work a register, I would look for these characteristics:
Honesty: I can't afford to have a thief working the cash register.
Good work ethic: I don't want someone who contributes to long lines because he/she takes five minutes on one customer.
Personableness: I would rather hire someone that creates a pleasant experience for customers than someone who doesn't seem to like the customers.
Competent in the area of arithmetic: He/she should know how to calculate change in his/her head.
Capable of being assertive: If the setting is fast food, he she at times must communicate with cooks and not be afraid to tell them what is needed.
