Hi! im going to be a sophmore and i just wanted to be ahead of the game. An ivy league (preferably Brown or Princeton) is one of my big priorities. Any ideas on how to STAND OUT academically and personally? What are some tips and advice for being accepted to Brown?
Well, academically, you want to have as high of SAT/ ACT scores as possible. You can find out what kind of scores are the norm for accepted freshman in the schools you are looking at (try princetonreview.com), and then create a strategy to help you achieve those scores. Taking both tests sophomore year will let you analyze your weaknesses, and then you can take the tests again after looking at where you need to improve. You usually can't significantly raise your overall performance by just re-taking the test, but if you study and take practice tests, you can do better.
You will also want to have a rigorous high school set of classes, and you may want to look into taking classes at a local college while you are still in high school. Try to maintain a very high GPA in honors, IB, or AP classes. Also, depending on your intended field of study, take classes that make sense. AP studio art classes are good, but an AP calculus class is better if you intend to enter a math-related program rather than an art-related one. What are some tips and advice for being accepted to Brown?
You may also want to consider private tutoring (like Princeton Review class or individual tutor) to help you score as high as possible on the standardized tests.
