I want to try and grow my right hand nails for cleaner sounding finger picking. but every time I've tried they keep breaking or splitting. Any ideas??

I know it sounds kind of gay, but whatever!Tips or advice for growing nails for finger picking?
Okay - nails are one thing that classical guitar players obsess over.

If you are fingerpicking steel-string, don't bother with nails. The strings will only shred them anyway. Best to get yourself finger picks and learn to use those, they will give you more sound anyway.

For nylon strong guitars, the nails ned to be a certain length so tat you can play with the nails, the fleshy part of your fingertips, or a combination of both and they require constant maintenance.

The best way to make your nails stronger is to add gelatin to your diet, but not jell-o type products, straight gelatin. Eventually they will grow stronger and thicker.

If you break a nail days before a gig and can not grow a new one in time, the best temporary solution is to use a piece cut from a ping-pong ball glues to your nail. Fake nails are plastic and never sound right - the one finger with the fake nail will stick out and give you an inconsistent sound. The cellulose material of a ping pong ball will best match the feel and sound of a real nail (though it will look a little funny) - after the gig, take off the fake nail immediately, as having it glues to your finger may weaken the nail underneath and inhibit growth.

As a result of all of that, I don't bother playing with nails. Too much of a pain in the ***!Tips or advice for growing nails for finger picking?
Finger picks are usually worn in the opposite direction from the way your fingernails grow. If you are plucking upwards with your fingers, they will snag rather than pluck the strings and this is probably how you break them. I guess if you want to keep trying, why don't you use artificial nails? They glue on with crazy glue and might be stronger or at least reinforce your real nails.
A plastic thumbpick and two National steel finger picks will do it but strive to play with your finger tips only - not nails or picks and you will learn to develop your technique much better. That is because you can feel the strings...
Just wait patiently and it will come but to protect them don't try any risky things. And another thing, You are a ROCKING person! I think you are awesome. Keep playin' Peace to you!
take a biotin supplement to strengthen your nails. thats all i got.
