I've read a few articles here and there. Looking to read personal experiences, such as how did you introduce your newborn to your pets? Thanks for sharing :)Any tips or advice on how to introduce our dogs to our newborn?
I did several things. The first was I stopped doing most of the dog chores about three months before the baby came...so they were used to dad doing the feeding and letting them out in the morning. Then, we set up all the furniture and baby stuff about six weeks before I was due. That way, they could smell them, sit in the carseat, get used to the crib and humidifier making noise. When I delivered, I had my hubby take home a blanket the baby had been wrapped in for the dogs to smell. Then, when I came home, I made sure to go in and say hi to the dogs before the baby came in. My hubby brought her/him (I have two older children and one on the way) and let the dogs sniff the seat, the baby, and whatever else, as long as they did not lick the face or seem threatened by them. When the baby cried, I would go and get the baby and let them sniff her/him to show them he/she was fine. They got freaked out by the crying sound. Soon enough, my one dog didn't care much about the baby at all and the other one was pretty protective. In a good way. Just kinda judge how your dogs react and try not to freak out if they lick her head or sniff her feet. Dogs just want to know they are not being replaced and that the baby is part theirs too. It helped mine were small and not terribly posessive of me. But we had no issues, thankfully. We will do it the same with this child.Any tips or advice on how to introduce our dogs to our newborn?
Start with letting your dog smell a blanket that the baby used before you bring them home from the hospital.
Your suppose to keep the hat they first put on your newborn at birth, and leave it for the dogs to smell. That scent will help them adjust.
';puppy this is baby, baby this is puppy.';
No i am joking. Really just have someone else on hand when you bring baby home. Let the dog be curious and sniff around the baby, and if the dog reacts badly someone will be there to grab his/her collar.
We did this with out dog and he had no problem. Generally if you have a nonaggression or a calm dog their is not worry.
Younger hyper dogs are the big worry and need to be watched closely for the first few weeks.
Before you bring your baby home have someone take a dirty diaper or two home. Sounds gross I know, but the smell is very strong and the diaper sound is new to the dog also.
This way your dog will know the baby's smell before the baby comes home and it won't be such a shock.
Try to keep up the same routine you had with your dog.
Get your dog a nice bone from the grocery store or a butcher to keep the
dog occupied while your attention is on you baby.
Lots of praise for your dog, dogs do get jealous.
