Any tips/advice you can give me to help myself become a writer and sell my book sucessfully? No silly or rude answers please.I'm 14 and I really wanna be a writer. Any tips/advice that can help me be a professional writer?
First of all, good for you! To have the discipline to finish a book length manuscript at your age is fantastic! You're way ahead of many writers already.
One of the hardest skill for writers to master is the revision. Most beginning writers don't want to believe that their manuscript isn't good enough from the beginning, but every book that you see published has been through multiple drafts. If you aren't sure how to go about revising your book, find someone who knows literature and would be willing to read your manuscript and be honest with you. Come up with ideas together on how to make it better. Consult books on how to properly format your manuscript because no matter how well you write, if your book isn't formatted properly, no one will take you seriously.
When you sincerely believe that your manuscript is as good as you can possibly make it, then you need to find an agent. There are a lot of scam artists out there so don't ever sign on with an agent that wants you to give them money before they've found you a publisher. I strongly recommend researching an agent online before sending them your manuscript. Verify that they represent writers who have actually published books before. Expect to get rejected a lot, no matter how good you are. Getting published isn't easy and it takes some writers years! (So at least you're getting an early start!) ';Anne of Green Gables'; was rejected over 100 times before it was accepted, and there was a lot less competition back then. :o)
Whether or not you choose to write for magazines or newspapers depends entirely on what kind of writer you want to be. If you want to be a reporter, then by all means, study journalism and go for it. If you prefer to write short stories, then try and get them published in magazines (the advice about revising stands for short stories, but you don't need an agent to get them published). If you want to write novels, then trying to get something published in a magazine is probably not going to do you much good. Literary journals are great for your resume if you want to teach writing, but otherwise don't really help you get a book published.
Best of luck and remember that patience and persistance are the best qualities you can have as a writer!I'm 14 and I really wanna be a writer. Any tips/advice that can help me be a professional writer?
Good answer for you ! Go to Barnes n Noble and check out the books for authors including a book entitled ';Writing for Money'; I have the book it tells you how and more importantly when to submit your articles to various magazines. You see many writers make the mistake of submitting their pieces at the wrong time. They think about say Thanksgiving in November then write about it submit an article and hope to get published but what you will find if you pick up this book is many magazines have deadlines far in advance of various holidays ... months in advance.
If you really want to be a professional writer you should also get into the habit of writing every day! Get yourself a notebook and set aside a time each day to write, you could work on a specific project each day or just journal.
I wish you well!
writer, huh... how about going to quizilla.com? They offer storywriting, journal writing, poll making, quizzes, poetry writing and song compositions. Then, try to publish it on that site so that other members can see it and post their comments also...you have to be a member so that you can post your works of art on their site. If you don't like the idea, how's this, start with something small, share it first with your friends...don't rush things. You're still 14 and there are still many things you can do, you know? Then, if you think you can do good enough, try sending your writings to a mag or newspaper company that accepts them, and make sure you correct your spelling and grammar too! Good Luck on journey to being a writer!
Start and keep a journal. It will be an amazing source of information later. Do real life character sketches in it. You may want to get a manual on journal keeping. You can find one at your local bookstore.
Write every chance you get. Try to write for an hour a day. Enter every free writing contest that comes along. When you get to high school join the school newspaper.
Contact established writers and find out what you have to do to get published. Subscribe to Writers Digest.
write every day, even when you can't write, do it. And become a sort of reporter, asking questions of everyone you know. Ask them about their favorite things, their least favorite things, what they wanted to be when they grew up; and how they feel about how they actually did grow up. Ask about families, pets, homes they lived in. Get a sense of their words. And then write it all down. Learn to manipulate the words they gave you into something new and fresh.
Write down the memories of family. This is something you will not only use later in your writing, but you will want to have later down the line for your own life.
And talk to children and older people. They both have amazing insites into the universe; things you don't see.
Don't expect to be published right away. Sometimes it doesn't happen instantly. But keep writing. Write even if no one but you ever reads it. Some day, it will be read. I have to believe that not only for you, but for everyone who writes.
Try going to this really cool website harperteen.com it is really great it is made for young authors and u can sell ur books if you please.
Not only should you write into magazines and newspapers, but you should consider (when you're old enough) writing for a newspaper or magazine. The best way to get your work read and published is to work for a published work. On top of getting paid for formal training on how to write, the networking you'll recieve while there will greatly benefit you.
