How much does a dealer usally take off when you buy a car? I am no good a negotiating, any tips/advice?

www.edmunds.com has invoice pricing plus what others are paying in your zip code. Low end car, Cobalt, Versa, Fit, Yaris only marked up about $400. Higher end car QX 56, Denali, BMW's sometimes marked up to 10k. Also, if you are trading in and get them to go with invoice price, you are now buying at wholesale, your trade in is now worth wholesale dollars as well.

Try and stay away from kbb.com as no matter what you are looking at ( trade in, retail, etc.) numbers are all inflated. If trade is says 8- 6500k, we can probably buy it at auction for 5500-6000. We are not going to pay 8000 for a car we can purchase for 5500 at auction.

Go to www.carsdirect.com first to get an idea of the pricing of the car you want. Then find the website of a local dealership in your area and contact the internet sales manager. I have purchased my last 3 cars this way. I never deal with those sleazy salesman that are waiting outside the dealership. You will get a better deal, get the exact car you want, and it will take you about 75% less time at the dealership. They can even approve your loan before you get there. All I do when I go in is a test drive, and then sign the loan docs. Its easy. How much does a dealer usally take off when you buy a car? I am no good a negotiating, any tips/advice?
Best way to find out what profit a dealer is making is by getting a price quote from Consumer Reports...small fee for each car quote which shows retail price and dealer cost for an individual vehicle and options but it gives you a pretty good idea of how much profit is being made. Profit percentages can vary a lot depending on make and model, time of year, incentives or rebates, financing, add-ons like rustproofing, paint sealer, fabric protection---not worth the money spent, you're basically paying for the warranty---not the product...huge profits for the dealer...

Try to purchase at the end of the month when dealers are trying to meet sales goals and more likely to bargain or end of the year, in bad weather, spring rebates, etc.. Know what's a fair price and profit before negotiating and stick with it...it's your money. Try to have alternative financing from a bank or credit union lined up in advance...check all rates and fees carefully...once you sign a contract, you can't back out without paying a penalty....sometimes not at all so be very careful. Set the price of the vehicle before considering any trade-in pricing.
As a car salesman speaking, they will take off nothing if they don't have to! They will discount only to sweeten a deal to close it, to meet your budget monthly payment-wise, or if you negotiate. Tip: let the salesman/dealership know that you were offered invoice price at another dealership but that you didn't take it because of the color. Also, get invoice pricing up-front before you even walk into the dealership--that is, have numbers down before you walk in to ';negotiate.'; Good Luck
Well they discount as little as possible. The ammount they can discount a car varies by make, model etc. It is their job to get as much money for the car as possible and your job to save as much money as possible.

The best way to get a good deal especially if you not good at negotiations is to do your research! There are several great sites out there to do this on! Do not pay for research the information such as invoice pricing etc. is all available out there for free!

Do your research get pricing information and quotes before ever going to the dealership. If you are not good at negotiations it would be a mistake to even walk on the lot without knowing good information. You can get price quotes and even begin negotiations on the internet and through Email.

In case I have not stressed it enough do your research! Also make sure your aware of any rebates or incentives available when your ready to purchase. Set the price you are willing to pay based off your research and don't give in! The hardest part about negotiations for most buyers is being able to finally just walk away if they are not getting where they want.

Shoot me an Email if you have any other questions.
It depends on the price of the car. More expensiver car, more room to strech. What kind of car? American make will be easier to negotiate than Japanese. If you have something in your mind, go check out Edmunds.com. On the top, all the way to the right, click on ';forums';. Find the make you want, the model. There's going to be a lot of forum for the make. Click on the one saying buying experiences.. There going to be a thread saying how much other people paid for the car. That could give you some idea. Also call (or email) dealerships, ask for bottom price for the car you selected (first look in they websites inventory to see if they have the model, color you want). And go for the dealership that offers the lowest price for the car. They prefer you go in, but insist, that you want to do it over the phone, you don't have time to go in and tell them, you go for the best offer. That's what I did last time so I only went to pick up the truck, I was in and out in an hour, no hassle for the price, I already know that before. Only the financing had to be done. So first, search in the inventories, if you find something you like, you call or email thru they website and they call you back. Don't buy in the first place, sometimes you have to walk out before you get a better deal! Good luck!
Just go to www.kbb.com. Enter the info for the car you are looking at and the options. Get the prices for Private sale AND Retail sale. If it is over retail...negotiate. A good price on a car should be somewhere between wholesale (private) and retail price....NEVER pay more. If they don't wanna work with you...go elsewhere. If they get pushy, just walk out. They can't stop you. Don't worry about being rude, especially if they are being rude by pressuring you. Also, make sure they'll cover anything wrong with it before you buy and make sure they'll at least give you a 30-90 lemon warranty. Ya never know. Also, ONLY get a car YOU like...don't let them push you into a car you aren't sure you like. Thats about it. Just act like a bada$$ and come into it well informed of the cars actual value.
